Can I ask other landlords...........

1. If you use your car to run your lettings busines,......do you insure your car for business use ?

2. If you do insure your car for business use......do you claim the additional cost of that business use as an expense in addition to the current £0.45p mileage allowance ?

When filling out the insurance application it will ask if the car will be used for business, and how many miles, so yes I do declare this.

If claiming mileage allowance this encompasses all motor expenses, no more are allowable.

As an alternative we may claim motoring expenses and then the costs would be proportioned and a depreciation allowance calculated.

We must choose one method or the other for each car, that is we can't change our method of claiming part way through ownership of a vehicle.

I suspect that many landlords don't declare their car is being used in their rental business. Some insurers such as Esure already include business use at no extra cost but many don't automatically include it.
