Leaving "gifts" from Tenants

Recommended Posts

Well I have a landlord with 4 properties who had a 5th one that he tried to manage himself and asked me to sort it out and evict the tenant who was a little old Irish lady of about 75.

When we got the eviction through and entered the property we found it had been left in good order except for a largish pile of human waste right in the centre on the lounge carpet.

That made me chuckle as she went to the effect of cleaning the rest of the property. I guess it was her leaving card.

just out of curiosity, what is the worst thing that a tenant has left behind for you

1. A hole in the bath.

2. A pile of dutch porno mags.

3. A large decorating bill.

4. Burn't worktops after 6 months (after a kitchen refurb immediately before they moved in).

5. A major window sill pigeon problem ......because they had been feeding them.

6. Serious damage to an electric heater & bay window where tenant had been drying clothes.

7. Serious black mould in an airing cupboard because tenant had been drying wet clothes in it.

8. Unpaid rent / no forwarding address..

Been letting residential property since 1999 .....so not a long list for almost 15 years.

Well, Grampa's pile of pooh is a tough one to follow.

Worst thing I have found is a flat full of syringes and drug paraphanalia after being called there by the police. Body of tenant still in situ with needle in arm - it was Boxing Day many years ago. It makes me shudder to re-think of this.

Even after the initial clean had taken place we the deocrator found tiny blood spatters on ceilings near windows - power had been cut off and tenant had been using natural light to fix up we supposed.

Yeah unfortunately Mortitia - this is pretty commonplace for my team, makes you wonder why so many people turn to drugs in the first place.....

There is also a very large amount of people that think it is perfectly acceptable to decorate their walls etc in either human, dog or cat poop - I guess Dulux doesn't make a brown that looks "pooey" enough!

Blood, drugs, needles, human waste, death & destruction ?

Never heard anything like it......I must have led a very quiet landlording existance......and long may that be the case.

Here's a tip: Try to avoid these types of people, they aren't particularly difficult to recognise.

Many, many, many years ago I did my work experience (project trident, remember that) at a housing association office. I went out with a housing officer to a property that had been "vacated". I had no idea what a dirty protest was until then. The strange thing was that there was a Jensen Interceptor left in the garage. Hence these days when some people say "chalk and cheese", I think "faeces and Jensen". Obviously I've cleaned that up a bit.
