scoot2001
Hi, Struggling to find some info on this but is the smoke detector issue in rental properties still a grey area or are the compulsory? All my houses apart from one (which a family member lives in) are turn of the century Victorian terraces (Preston, Lancs area) if it makes any difference. Thanks. scoot2001
Thanks for the replies people, I will get some purchased and fitted in the houses I have without them. One last thing though, I see from the replies that I need 2 per property but do they have to be situated anywhere in particular or is it simple one on each floor (say kitchen and upstairs landing) and will the sticky adhesive ones with batteries do? Thanks, Scott.
scoot2001
Not sure if this site is out of date but it looks current as it talks about HMO properties. Seems smoke detectors are not yet a legal requirement. Go to this site and scoll down the page: http://www.letlink.co.uk/GeneralInfo/safety.htm Scott. russ295
1 on each floor no greater than 7 mtrs of kitchen and living room or other area where fire could start. E.g.: integral garages. No greater than 3 mtrs from bedroom doors. ref- the sticky ones. as long as they make a noise when there is smoke around they will suffice
JAMIE8
Smoke detectors are only compulasry in HMO’s and homes build after June 1992 (where they must be mains wired) otherwise there is no law coverning them. At work we would advise landlords to fit them as “a duty of care”
