Moving & storage costs - allowable expense?

Recommended Posts

Earlier this year our family moved from one end of the country to another due to work. As it was such a big move we decided to let our property out and rent a property in the new area, which is what we did. I am now attempting to sort out the profit/loss figures for the inland revenue and am wondering if the removal costs ie. removal company, boxes etc is an allowable expense?

Also in order to market our home we 'de-cluttered' and put lots of items (kids plastic tat) into storage, this was for about six weeks - could we claim this expense?

I'm not sure if I need to get an accountant or if this is something I can do myself and would be interested to know what others think, how much would an accountant charge in this sort of situation?

I am fairly certain that what you are asking for would not be deemed as a tax allowable expense by HMRC.

If you don't want to seek professional advice then a quick phone call to HMRC will normally give you the answer you are looking for.

Mel.
